Acorex

Generic Name: Ambroxol HCl
Therapeutic Class: Mucolytic & Expectorant

Composition
Acorex Syrup: Each 5 ml syrup contains Ambroxol Hydrochloride BP 15 mg.
Pharmacology
Acorex (Ambroxol) is a mucolytic expectorant, helps to clear chest by thinning the mucus in air passage. Chemically,
Ambroxol is the active metabolite of bromhexine and possesses a greater bronchosecretolytic effect than bromhexine.
Ambroxol improves sputum rheology by hydrating mechanism leading to liquefication of mucus in the lumen of respiratory
tract, thus facilitating expectoration of mucus and reducing dyspnea. It stimulates production of phospholipids of surfactant
by alveolar cells, thus contributing to the lowering of superficial tension in the alveoli. It also reduces bronchial
hyper-reactivity to stimuli. Ambroxol has anti-inflammatory properties owing to the inhibitory effect on the production of
cellular cytokines and arachidonic acid metabolites. Ambroxol improves airway patency in patients with COPD.
Indication
Acorex (Ambroxol) is used in conditions where there are a lot of thick secretion or mucus in air passage like-

  • Productive cough
  • Acute and chronic inflammatory disorders of respiratory tracts associated with viscid mucus including acute and chronic
    bronchitis.
  • Inflammatory diseases of rhinopharyngeal tract (e.g. laryngitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis and rhinitis) associated with viscid
    mucus.
  • Asthmatic bronchitis, asthma with thick expectoration
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Chronic pneumonia

Dosage and Administration
Acorex should be taken after meal. Dosage should be individualized, depending on patient's condition and response. The
usual recommended doses are

Epigastric pain, gastric fullness may occur occasionally. Rarely allergic responses such as eruption, urticaria or
angioneurotic edema has been reported.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Teratogenic and fetal toxicity studies have shown no harmful effect of Ambroxol. However, it is advised not to use it in
pregnancy, especially during the 1st trimester. Safety during lactation has not yet been established.
Drug Interaction
Ambroxol should not be taken simultaneously with antitussives (e.g. Codeine) because phlegm, which has been liquefied by
Ambroxol might not be expectorated.

Serious intoxication symptoms have not been observed with the overdose of ambroxol. Brief restlessness and diarrhea have
been reported.
